Every dog parent has that moment of quiet worry as they drive away. Your pup is happy, tail wagging, already making friends. But somewhere in the back of your mind, a small voice asks: what if something goes wrong?
It’s a fair question. And it deserves a real answer.
At K9 Heaven, we’ve been caring for dogs for over 20 years and have welcomed more than 15,230 pups through our gates. In that time, we’ve learned that trust isn’t built by pretending accidents never happen. It’s built by being honest about how we respond when they do.
So here’s our protocol, explained plainly and without the fine print.
How We Prevent Incidents at Our Doggy Daycare
Before we talk about what happens when something goes wrong, it helps to understand what we do to keep things going right.
Every dog at K9 Heaven is grouped by size and temperament. This isn’t just a nice idea. It’s one of the most important safety decisions we make every single day. A small, gentle pup playing alongside well-matched mates of similar size and energy is far less likely to be overwhelmed or accidentally hurt than one dropped into a mixed group with no structure.
Our team maintains nose-to-tail observation throughout every session. That means eyes on your dog, consistently, from the moment they arrive to the moment they leave. We also require all dogs to be fully vaccinated, current with their DHP, Leptospirosis, and Kennel Cough vaccinations, and desexed if they’re over eight months old. These requirements exist because a healthy pack is a safer pack.
We’re IBPSA certified, and our team is trained in pet first aid. Preparation is built into how we operate, not bolted on as an afterthought.
What Happens the Moment We Notice Something
If a staff member notices that your dog is injured or unwell, they act immediately. There’s no “wait and see.” There’s no hoping it resolves on its own.
The first step is to remove your pup from the group and bring them to a quiet, calm space away from the activity. First, we assess what’s happened. Is this a minor scrape, a limb that’s being favoured, or something more serious? Our team’s first aid training means we can triage clearly and without panic.
Whatever it is, we will always let you know. We don’t wait until pickup. We don’t send a vague message hours later. You’ll hear from us as soon as we have a clear picture of what’s happened and what we’re doing about it.
Minor Incidents vs. Situations That Need a Vet
Not every incident is a veterinary emergency. Part of what our team is trained to do is distinguish between the two.
Minor incidents, things like a small graze, a superficial cut from play, or a pup who’s a little stiff after a big run, are treated on-site with basic first aid. We document everything, clean and attend to the area, and monitor your dog for the rest of the session. You’ll receive a full update at pickup, and we’ll walk you through exactly what we observed and how we responded.
If something is more serious, or if there’s any uncertainty at all, we contact you immediately and take your dog to a vet. We don’t wait for permission to act in your pup’s best interest. Our team is empowered to make that call because we know you’d want us to.
The Conversation We’ll Have With You
We know the phone call no dog parent wants to receive. So when we make it, we make sure it’s clear, calm, and useful.
You’ll hear what happened, when it happened, what we did right away, and what the next steps are. If your dog needs vet care, we’ll tell you which clinic we’re going to and whether you should meet us there. If it’s a minor incident being managed on-site, we’ll give you a full rundown so you understand the situation completely.
We won’t use vague language or brush past details. You deserve the full picture, and we give it to you.
After the Incident: What We Do Next
Our responsibility doesn’t end when your dog goes home. After any incident, we complete a full written record of what occurred. This includes the time, the circumstances, the dogs involved, the response taken, and any recommendations for follow-up care.
We review that record as a team. We look at whether something in the environment or the grouping contributed to what happened, and we make adjustments where they’re warranted. This is how a good care facility improves over time, not by pretending incidents don’t happen, but by learning from them honestly.
If your dog has been involved in an incident, we’ll follow up with you. We want to know how they’re recovering, and we want to talk through any concerns you have before their next visit.
What to Ask Any Doggy Daycare Before You Book
When choosing a doggy daycare for your pal, these are the questions you’ll want to ask…
What are your supervision ratios, and is there always someone watching the dogs? How are groups structured? Do you have staff trained in pet first aid? What’s your process if a dog is injured? When do you contact the owner, and how? Do you have a relationship with a local vet?
The answers tell you everything about whether a facility takes safety seriously or just says it does.
At K9 Heaven, we’re happy to answer every one of those questions in detail. Transparency isn’t a policy for us. It’s just how we operate.
