What NOT to pack for your dog’s first kennel stay (and what to bring instead)

For many dog parents, booking their dog’s first stay at dog kennels comes with a mix of excitement and uncertainty. You want them to feel comfortable, settled, and well cared for while you are away. One of the first questions that comes up is “What should I pack for their first stay?”

At K9 Heaven, we refer to dog kennels as overnight dog boarding. Your dog is not just staying somewhere, they are stepping into a structured, enriching environment with access to our doggy daycare and 10-acre farm. Over time, we have found that dogs settle best when things are kept simple. Too many items from home can actually make it harder for them to adjust.

Before we get into what to bring, it helps to understand what not to pack, and why.

What not to pack for dog kennels

It is natural to want to send your dog with everything that makes them feel comfortable, but in most dog kennels, less is more. Most kennels and boarding facilities come equipped with everything you dog needs for a safe and comfortable stay. In most cases, bringing less helps your dog settle faster. It allows them to focus on the environment, the routine, and the experience, rather than trying to hold onto familiar items.

So, before sending your dog for an overnight stay, here’s what you can leave at home.

Bedding

Bedding is one of the most common items people bring, and one of the least needed. At K9 Heaven, all boarding dogs are provided with comfortable, clean bedding designed specifically for the kennel environment. Large beds from home can be bulky, harder to manage, and sometimes unfamiliar once placed in a new setting. A simple blanket with your scent is more than enough if your dog needs that extra reassurance.

Toys

It’s only natural to want your dog to have fun, and we totally understand why some dog parents would want to bring their dog’s favourite toys. While one toy for comfort and familiarity is OK, most dog kennels do not welcome additional toys. At K9 Heaven, your dog will enjoy daily enrichment activities and pack runs in our 10-acre farm. On top of that, our dog kennels also include plenty of toys for mental and physical stimulation.

Treats & Chews

Treats or chews are generally best avoided. Some dogs can become protective of food items, especially in a group setting. This can create unnecessary stress and disrupt the calm, balanced environment we work to maintain. At K9 Heaven, we already incorporate treats into our enrichment activities. If you choose to upgrade to Boujee boarding, individual treats, toys, and chews are all included.

What to bring instead

Once you strip things back, what your dog actually needs is quite simple.

Medication or supplements should always be packed if required. Clear labelling and instructions are essential, as consistency plays a key role in your dog’s health and wellbeing. At K9 Heaven, our team is experienced in administering medication, so you can feel confident your dog will be well looked after. If your dog requires medication, always let the boarding facility know beforehand.

A small comfort item, such as a blanket or an item of clothing with your scent, can be helpful for some dogs, particularly those new to boarding. While most dogs settle quickly without it, familiar smells can provide an extra layer of reassurance during rest periods.

And that is really all your dog needs. Everything else is already taken care of.

What about food?

Food sits somewhere in between the “what not to pack” and “what to pack” lists.

At K9 Heaven, all of our boarding dogs are supplied with premium Happy Hour meals. If, however, your dog has a specific diet they need to follow, we recommend packing their own food and letting the team know. It’s always helpful to portion meals clearly and provide simple feeding instructions so that the staff on hand can follow your dog’s routine as closely as possible.

Why routine matters more than belongings

What many owners do not realise is that dogs tend to settle based on structure rather than possessions. Well-run dog kennels provide consistent routines, including regular feeding times, exercise, rest periods, and socialisation. These predictable patterns help dogs feel secure and understand their environment quickly.

Adding too many items from home can sometimes disrupt this balance rather than support it. A calm, structured environment is often far more reassuring than a collection of familiar objects.

Setting your dog up for a smooth stay

Preparing your dog before their stay can make a noticeable difference. If possible, arranging a short trial stay or a daycare visit allows your dog to become familiar with the environment, the smells, and the people caring for them. This early exposure helps reduce uncertainty.

At K9 Heaven, we offer a trial day so that we can get to know your dog. During a trial day, your dog will get to experience our leading doggy daycare where they will engage in enrichment activities, pack runs in our 10-acre farm, and safe socialisation with dogs of a similar size and temperament.

At the end of the day, your dog does not need a suitcase full of belongings. They need good care, a structured routine, and an environment where they can safely be a dog.
